There's a 3-frame window on the edge of the pillar in which you can long jump, which means you can reach a gravity vector that puts you on the back of the castle. From here you can jump straight to the wheel, and potentially land directly onto the star in the Comet.
For Luigi's Comet runs, this is ~2 seconds faster than the lavaboost strat. Not sure how much faster it'd be for Mario if it's faster at all, although the 0.88s of coin textbox for lava boost strat should be put into consideration.
Let's say Mario loses 2 seconds to Luigi in movement from the point you'd lava boost up to jumping to the star (which imo is an overestimation), it would still be better to go for in an Any% TAS because of that coin textbox.

This is a relatively simple eeeeyah-heavy star.
The two key parts are getting around the Magikoopa cutscene trigger - which was aided by getting the long jump onto the main ledge as far left as possible while still being fast - and triple jumping onto the... hedge? Mound? and then timing the spin from the backflip.
Long jump backflip spin is 0.3s slower than this triple jump.")
