First Prize in the ZEISS Photography Competition 2017.
This video is part of a study into using high-fidelity computational modelling to understand the impact of having measurement devices within aircraft engines. It shows what happens to the fluid surrounding a turbine blade, with a probe at the front of it over time.
A whole host of flow phenomena is present within this complex flow, such as vortex shedding behaviour and large counter-rotating vortices.
Acknowledgements: Supervisors Professor Paul Tucker (Cambridge) and Dr Shahrokh Shahpar (Rolls-Royce). Also Dr Henry Ng (was at the Whittle lab, but now at University of Liverpool) and Dr John Coull (Whittle lab, but transitioning to Oxford). And EPSRC for access to the ARCHER cluster – the UK National supercomputing facility.
