Bryan Kohberger is heading back toward court as he fights to withdraw the guilty plea that resulted in four consecutive life sentences.
Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in the deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. The plea agreement removed the death penalty from consideration.
Now Kohberger is seeking post-conviction relief and asking the court to allow him to withdraw that plea. In his petition, he alleges that he was pressured to falsely confess, that promises made to him were not kept, and that potentially favorable evidence was withheld or not properly explained to him before he entered the plea.
Judge Steven Hippler has set a status conference for June 3, 2027, with June 17, 2027 reserved for an evidentiary hearing as the court considers how Kohberger's challenge will proceed. Some reports describe the evidentiary hearing as granted, while the Associated Press reports the judge has not yet decided that Kohberger is entitled to a hearing on the merits of his claims.
