Bryan Kohberger is a former criminology Ph.D. student who was arrested in December 2022 for the murder of four University of Idaho students: Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Madison Mogen. The victims were found stabbed to death in an off-campus house on November 13, 2022. After a month-long search, Kohberger was apprehended in Pennsylvania after investigators linked him to the crime scene through DNA found on a knife sheath left at the scene.
After initially having a not-guilty plea entered on his behalf in May 2023, Kohberger ultimately took a plea deal on June 30, 2025, to avoid the death penalty, reports E! Online. He formally pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary on July 2, 2025, stating that he acted "willingly, unlawfully, deliberately and with premeditation and malice with forethought", according to E! Online. As part of the agreement, he waived his right to appeal and to seek a more lenient sentence, receiving four consecutive life sentences for the murders, plus 10 years for the burglary charge. His sentencing is scheduled for July 23, 2025
