Dr. Facilier didn’t become one of Disney’s most unforgettable modern villains by accident.
In this exclusive interview, legendary animator Bruce Smith reveals how he helped bring The Princess and the Frog’s Shadow Man to life -- from the character’s slick movement and how Cab Calloway, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Captain Hook, and Cruella de Vil all influenced his charm, menace, and style.
But Bruce’s journey to Dr. Facilier began long before The Princess and the Frog. Growing up in Los Angeles, he loved cartoons like The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and 101 Dalmatians, but eventually realized how rarely Black people were represented in the worlds he loved. Instead of accepting that absence, Bruce made it part of his mission to help change what animation could look like, who it could speak to, and whose stories it could carry.
That mission would shape a groundbreaking career, from directing BeBe’s Kids and working on Space Jam, Tarzan, The Emperor’s New Groove, and Hair Love, to creating The Proud Family, one of Disney’s most beloved and culturally important animated series.
Bruce also opens up about working with Keith David, whose voice became inseparable from Dr. Facilier’s charm, danger, humor, and musical swagger. Together, their work helped create a villain who feels both classic Disney and completely fresh.
