Bruce Avery Van Voorhis, U.S. Navy aviator, was born on January 29, 1908 in Aberdeen, Washington and grew up in Nevada. In July 1943, after a 700-mile flight alone, Van Voorhis launched successive bombing and strafing attacks, and succeeded in destroying a radio station, antiaircraft emplacements, and at least one airborne fighter as well as three others on the water. However, he was killed during the mission. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
