In the late 19th century, engineers dared to dream of a colossal span uniting Brooklyn and Manhattan – a bridge unlike any the world had seen. Stronger steel cables promised longer reaches across the water, but the East River was no ordinary obstacle. Its currents surged fast and deep, nearly 10 metres on the Manhattan side, concealing layers of silt, sewage, and shifting sludge above the bedrock. To anchor towers here meant digging through filth and stone, 24 metres beneath the surface, in an unforgiving underworld of pressure and darkness.
The solution was as ingenious as it was perilous: the caisson, a massive watertight chamber sunk to the riverbed, where men (sandhogs) laboured in compressed air to carve foundations into the rock. It was a triumph of human grit and engineering brilliance, laying the groundwork for what would become the longest suspension bridge of its time. When it opened in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge stood not just as a marvel of steel and stone, but as a symbol of ambition, resilience, and the audacity to defy nature’s limits.
