The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute welcomed a female Asian elephant calf on Monday, Feb. 2, 2026.

The footage in this video was taken shortly after the calf was born. Shortly after birth, keepers conducted a comprehensive neonate exam, which required the calf to stand and walk to a scale. In this footage, keepers are seen using supportive, padded straps to help the calf stand and take her first steps. Within five hours of birth, the calf was walking on her own.
