Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) composed this five movement suite based on Rossini themes in 1941, to pair with his "Soirées Musicales" (also based on Rossini) as a ballet for the American Ballet Theater. He took themes from the ballet music of "William Tell" for his March and Waltz, and drew upon "Pechés de vieillesse" ("Sins of old age") for the others. (Album notes)
This live performance from Boston's Symphony Hall is under the baton of Arthur Fiedler (1894-1979. Fiedler was conductor of the Boston Pops for fifty years.
