UK Parliament | British Film and High-End TV | Third Session – Culture, Media and Sport Committee @ukparliament | Uploaded 6 months ago | Updated 8 hours ago
How can the UK maintain its competitiveness as a destination for global film and TV production?

In today’s session, the Culture Media and Sport Committee will be focusing their attention on investment into the UK’s film and high-end TV industry, and how the UK can maintain its competitiveness as a hub of productions.

The Committee will first hear from Jane Tranter, co-founder and CEO of production company Bad Wolf, and producer behind Doctor Who, Succession and His Dark Materials.

MPs will ask about recent trends in high-end TV production and the impact of inward investment on producers and audiences. Questions may also explore how Bad Wolf, headquartered in South Wales, built a strong regional talent base, and the opportunities and challenges of establishing similar regional production hubs.

In the second panel, the Committee will hear from the British Film Commission and the UK Screen Alliance, industry bodies at the heart of discussions with those choosing to make film and high-end television in the UK, on how the UK attracts inward investment. They will be joined by Pinewood group, a studio that benefits directly from investment.

The Committee might seek to understand the UK’s attractiveness for inward investment, its recent decline and how this inward investment impacts the UK’s independent productions. MPs are likely to explore views on the Government’s announcement of VFX tax reliefs in the Spring Budget, and whether the UK’s production tax incentives need more adjustments.

The UK’s post-production workforce and proposals to incentivise production outside the south-east may also be discussed.
