Elena Pinderhughes performing in front of Retopistics: A Renegade Excavation by Julie Mehretu
"When I play, I always try to ground myself in a story I’m trying to tell. Playing with Julie Mehretu’s artwork right there in front of me, I felt it come alive in a whole new way, like the painting and I were each telling a piece of the same story. I felt connected to her work. The closer I looked at her canvas, the more it broke open into smaller moments and layers, each one holding its own little story. So, the piece is built with the base layers telling the first story and then I improvised my own story on top of them. I loved the chance to bring the two worlds together."
