Here I play Carnavalito from Suite del Recuerdo by: Jose Luis Merlin on my 2016 Loyola Marymount University Senior Recital.
Program Note: Jose Luis Merlin is an internationally acclaimed Argentinian guitarist and composer. Carnavalito is the fourth movement of a larger work titled Suite del Recuerdo. This Suite was written as homage to Merlin’s home country of Argentina, from which he had left behind and immigrated to Spain. A carnavalito is a traditional style of dance in Argentina commonly used in religious ceremonies. The world carnavalito literally translates to “little carnival”, illustrating the celebratory nature of the dance itself. The dance itself actually blends both native South American as well as Spanish elements together. This might suggest the influence that both Argentinian and Spanish cultures have had on Merlin’s life. Additionally, Merlin tends to blend elements of Latin folk music with classical music traditions in his music. Merlin is known as a very spiritual person and through his music, he encourages people to look inwards and reconnect with their true selves.
