Our speaker today is Dr. Brian Czech, founding president & executive director of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (www.steadystate.org). Czech has also served in the headquarters of the US Fish & Wildlife Service, and as a visiting professor at Virginia Tech. He is an interdisciplinary scholar with over 50 journal articles appearing in more than 20 journals. He is the author of four books, including his latest, Gag-Ordered No More: The 800-Pound Gorilla in the U.S. Government.

DESCRIPTION: GDP is recognized far & wide as a poor indicator of social wellbeing, even among conventional economists. Some, therefore, would dismiss GDP altogether as a “meaningless” indicator. However, GDP is an excellent measure of the size of the economy &, therefore, environmental impact. Statistically, GDP is a proxy for ecological footprint and should be used to “weigh” the ever-bloating economic patient.
