![The Private Equity Playbook | How Private Equity Bought Everyday Life | Moconomy Originals
Private equity firms have become some of the most powerful forces in the global economy. This documentary examines how leveraged buyouts, sale-leasebacks, dividend recapitalizations and carried interest have reshaped companies, workers, hospitals, nursing homes, newspapers and communities. From Toys “R” Us and Red Lobster to Steward Health Care and the collapse of local journalism, the story reveals a financial model built on debt, extraction and limited accountability.
Synopsis
In 2005, Toys “R” Us was still a profitable company with billions in revenue. But after a private equity buyout loaded it with debt, the company was left with little room to invest, adapt or survive. Its collapse became a case study in a much larger financial playbook.
This documentary follows that playbook across the American economy: from retail bankruptcies and restaurant chains to nursing homes, hospitals and local newspapers. It explains how leveraged buyouts transfer risk onto the companies being acquired, how sale-leasebacks turn businesses into tenants of their own buildings, how dividend recapitalizations extract cash through new debt, and how carried interest rewards fund managers with favorable tax treatment.
The story moves from Toys “R” Us to Red Lobster, Steward Health Care, Alden Global Capital and the decline of local journalism, before expanding to Europe, where private equity is increasingly targeting healthcare, care homes, dental clinics, veterinary practices and other essential services. The central question is not whether private equity is legal. It is whether the system was designed to protect the people who live with its consequences.

![Britain Left the EU for This? The Truth About the Commonwealth | Full documentary | 4K
Britain Left the EU for This? The Truth About the Commonwealth - In June 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union partly on the promise of something better: the Commonwealth. Fifty-six countries, two and a half billion people, a dormant commercial network ready to replace the European Single Market. The problem is that at the time of Brexit, the Commonwealth represented just 9% of British trade.
The EU represented 43%. The Commonwealth was never an alternative. It was a story Britain told itself.
Britain Left the EU for This? The Truth About the Commonwealth (2026)
Director: Miranda Latorre
Writers: Miranda Latorre
Narrator: Derrek Carriveau
Genre: Documentary
Editor: Iván Moreno
Language: English
Release Date: mayo 2026
Synopsis:
This documentary asks what the Commonwealth actually is, how it came to be, and why an entire country could stake its economic future on an organization that almost no one can define. Built on the ruins of the largest empire in history, the Commonwealth spent its first decades as an instrument of managed decline, a way for Britain to preserve influence it no longer had the power to enforce. Over time it became something else entirely: not a tool of British power, but a forum where the smallest nations on earth could sit in the same room as the leaders of the worlds great powers.
The film traces the Commonwealths evolution from its origins in decolonization through its most consequential moments, including its role in isolating apartheid South Africa, a case where former colonies used a post-colonial institution to fight policies that were openly colonialist. It arrives at the central paradox: the organization benefits least the country that built it.
What Brexit exposed was not a geopolitical strategy but a failure of collective memory. The connections Britain hoped to activate through the Commonwealth arose from the empire. The empire is always there, as the film puts it, but it is never mentioned. The Commonwealth has, to a certain degree, allowed Britain to avoid confronting how much the world has changed since the sun last set on its empire.

![🏒 The owner who ran hockeys greatest dynasty into the ground for nearly 20 years
🏆 The Toronto Maple Leafs won their last Stanley Cup in 1967. What followed was nearly two decades under the control of Harold Ballard, one of the most controversial team owners in the history of professional sports. Ballard became the controlling owner in 1972 after buying out his partners shares. He was convicted of 47 white-collar crimes and served a year in prison, but returned and continued running the franchise exactly as before. 💰 Under his leadership, profits at Maple Leaf Gardens went up, but the team went in the opposite direction. Players left because he refused to pay them. Coaches were humiliated publicly. Decisions were driven by ego and revenue rather than competition. Star players like Dave Keon and Darryl Sittler either walked away or openly revolted against his management. 📉 By the 1980s, the Maple Leafs were considered one of the worst teams in the NHL, while Ballard kept filling every seat in the arena by booking concerts, wrestling events, even religious revivals. He ran the organization until his death in 1990. Directed and narrated by Jason Priestley, this documentary features former players, journalists and insiders who lived through the Ballard years and try to explain how one man could hold that much power over a team for that long. ▶️ Watch the full documentary on the channel.
