New original song ~ Breathe. Can you hear the hidden vgm references in the background?
Breathe is about medical gaslighting by doctors. This song expresses feelings of frustration over being dismissed. So many people have been told that a real problem is just "nothing", or "it's just in your head". Pretty much everyone we've talked to about this song has been at the receiving end of this to varying degrees, and at any age. The sustained word in the chorus - breathe - demands deep breaths in each note, and it represents several things. It represents being told by others to just" breathe", like that is going to solve the problem. It also represents telling it to yourself when panic arises.
This song is in a sweet spot for both of our voices, and it feels great to harmonize on this one. Donut adds so much to this song, adding a sense of urgency…plus, vibes.
In the video, I wanted to capture a slightly more focused/introspective feel with the closeup shots. The wavy light we used, I wanted to represent a bit of a feeling of being underwater or feeling woozy…plus, vibes. We also switched cameras and lenses throughout to give an off/uncanny vibe. When you're limited with resources and fanciness, it's a fun challenge to keep things simple with locations while getting creative.
The shots of us in the water/puddle outside was art directed by Donut, and we ended up using it as our main cover for our new EP! He set up the camera in a way that you can't see the lens in the shot. Super cool!
I did a TON of editing to make things fit (iykyk), color grading etc., with the water/rain images of the band. Glad I could utilize them in the music video, because it's our favorite visual of OrcaMind so far.
