Designing For | Breath of the Wild's Gerudo Desert -- Designing For Adaptability @DesigningFor | Uploaded May 2023 | Updated October 2024, 3 hours ago.
Designing For is a series which looks at one specific level, character, or idea in gaming and breaks down the central theme to that element to figure out what it's, well, designing for! In this episode, we look over the history of Zelda's most contentious tribe, the Gerudo. Forged of hardship, deceit, and mistrust, long have their deserts haunted players, and their king, Ganondorf, used that backing to rally his people toward conquest... yet Breath of the Wild shows us a different approach. Not only have the Gerudo adapted to their environment, the desert itself adapts with the times, providing a challenge that no longer is based on frustration and mistrust, but tackling challenge from a different angle and thriving in it, just as the Gerudo have.
