Mental health affects how we think, feel, and connect, yet stigma still keeps too many people silent.
In this video, Emma, who is a student and a member of SHP's Youth Adivisory Board, shares why mental health is just as vital as physical health and how misconceptions, especially linking mental illness to violence, deepen the stigma and limit access to care.
Sandy Hook Promise Action Fund works to expand access to life-saving mental health services and supports for students, including suicide prevention training and school-based care. Taking care of the whole child, both in physical safety and mental wellness, creates supportive school environments that can reduce the risk of violence toward oneself or others.
Mental illness does not cause gun violence. In fact, people living with mental illness are more likely to be victims of gun violence than perpetrators. Enhancing overall mental health support and services in schools and in communities can help students to lead healthy lives free from violence or self-harm

About Sandy Hook Promise
Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a national, nonprofit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut. We are led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, that claimed the lives of 20 first-graders and 6 educators. SHP is focused on preventing gun violence (and other forms of violence and victimization) BEFORE it happens by educating and mobilizing youth and adults on mental health and wellness programs that identify, intervene and help at-risk individuals. SHP is a moderate, above-the-politics organization that supports sensible non-policy and policy solutions that protect children and prevent gun violence. Our intent is to honor all victims of gun violence by turning our tragedy into a moment of transformation.
