#BREAKINGnews — Emotions are running high in Houston as community members gather for a vigil and protest following the deadly shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in the city's East End on Tuesday morning.
WHAT WE KNOW: According to ICE, officers were attempting to stop Salgado Araujo's vehicle as part of a targeted enforcement operation. The agency says he rammed their vehicle, refused verbal commands, and tried to run over an officer — leading the officer to open fire in what ICE describes as self-defense. Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, was shot in the abdomen and later died at a local hospital. The FBI is leading the investigation.
THE FAMILY'S ACCOUNT: His son, Ronaldo Salgado, says his father was on his way to a construction job, picking up workers, when the shooting happened. He says his father had lived in the U.S. for nearly 35 years and was in the process of obtaining legal status. "My father did not deserve this," he wrote.
THE RESPONSE: Salgado Araujo's family, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), FIEL Houston, and elected officials including Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia and State Rep. Christina Morales are calling for a transparent, independent investigation and for all footage and evidence to be preserved. Now, the community is taking to the streets — holding a vigil and protest to demand answers.
