BREAKING - HIGH ALERT - US Navy now in the South China Sea in support of Malaysia against China pressure.
According to a news report published by the Wall Street Journal on May 13, 2020, The U.S. has sent three naval ships on patrols near oil-and-gas operations off Malaysia’s coast in recent days, a show of support for the Southeast Asian nation whose offshore explorations in the South China Sea have faced pressure from China.
The littoral combat ship USS Gabrielle Giffords on Tuesday sailed close to a drillship named West Capella, contracted by Malaysia’s national oil company.
US Navy presence in the region, according to the report, is a sign of support coming from the United States, backing Malaysia against Chinese bullying.
This was a result of a standoff between a Malaysian oil exploration vessel and a Chinese survey vessel.
According to Reuters in a report published on May 12, 2020, An oil exploration vessel contracted by Malaysian state energy company Petronas was involved in a standoff with a Chinese survey vessel in the South China Sea.
The Chinese government vessel, the Haiyang Dizhi 8, according to tracking data from ship tracking website Marine Traffic, showed the vessel has been moving within Malaysia’s exclusive economic zone in a hash-shaped pattern consistent with carrying out a survey, as it did during a tense standoff in Vietnamese waters last year.
The incident, according to Reuters prompted the United States to call on China to stop its “bullying behavior” in the disputed waters.
