During Arduino Days 2026, Team Tachyons showcased an advanced autonomous robot built around the Arduino GIGA R1 WiFi to conquer the 2026 RoboCupJunior Rescue Maze challenge. Faced with tougher rules that introduced complex “cognitive targets” (multi-ring colored patterns robots must identify), the students leveraged the GIGA R1’s multi-threading and real-time processing capabilities. Their robot uses a custom Arduino shield, high-precision stepper motors, multiple ToF distance sensors, and a fused IMU for precise navigation, even on uneven terrain. On the software side, it builds a live 3D map of the maze to optimize its path autonomously.
With this setup, Team Tachyons earned second place at the Italian Nationals and qualified to compete in South Korea against thousands of top student builders.
