This video demonstrates how to play Mark Giulana's intro for the song "Seven Ways" from Jason Linder's 2009 album "Now vs. Now"
The basic structure is an alternating single stroke roll with 4 accented strokes grouped as: 3 plus 4. Then the five stroke roll rudiment is added to beats 3, 5, and 7.

This is a music video for my video game cover of the Title Theme from the Original Legend of Zelda game for the NES (also known as Title BGM). I tried to blend the original 8-bit sounds from the NES with live instrumentation.

The Legend of Zelda, originally released in Japan as The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu,[b][8][c] is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo.[9] The first game of The Legend of Zelda series, it is set in the fantasy land of Hyrule and centers on an elf-like boy named Link, who aims to collect the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom in order to rescue Princess Zelda from Ganon.[10] The player controls Link from a top-down perspective and navigates throughout the overworld and dungeons, collecting weapons, defeating enemies and uncovering secrets along the way.[11]
Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, it was originally released in Japan as a launch title for the Family Computer Disk System in February 1986.[12] More than a year later, North America and Europe received releases on the Nintendo Entertainment System in cartridge format, being the first home console game to include an internal battery in the US for saving data.[13] This version was later released in Japan in 1994 under the title The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu 1.[d][5] The game was ported to the GameCube and Game Boy Advance,[5] and was available via the Virtual Console on the Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.[15] It was also one of 30 games included in the NES Classic Edition system, and is available on the Nintendo Switch through the Nintendo Switch Online service.
The Legend of Zelda was a critical and commercial success for Nintendo. The game sold over 6.5 million copies, launched a major franchise, and has been regularly featured in lists of the greatest video games of all time. A sequel, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, was first released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System less than a year after its predecessor, and numerous additional successors and spinoffs have been released in the decades since its debut.

![Sinfonia No.10 in G Major BWV #796 [Chip Tune Arrangement]
The tenth of Bachs 15 Sinfonias (three part inventions) arranged for FamiTracker.
I took a different approach with this project than I did with the Two Part Inventions. Since latter is composed of only two voices, I used the empty channels in the FamiTracker to simulate reverb and delay effects to give the pieces a sense of depth, space, and life. I also kept them in mono, so they were generally a more pure representation of the NES hardware.
Since the Sinfonias introduce a third voice, I decided that I would do most of the sound design inside FamiTracker and export the stems to process inside Ableton Live. The result is less pure to the Chip Tune ethos, but I think service the music in a deeper way. The use of stereo mixing allows for the 3 parts to be spread out across the stereo field, giving the piece a wider sense of perspective - and the use of more conventional reverb and delay effects puts it in more of a real world environment.
As for the pieces themselves, I was less familiar with the Sinfonias than I was the Two Part Inventions. I also didnt do as much consulting of existing recordings for reference. Instead I tried to rely more on my own decisions about tempo, phrasing, and articulations so the interpretations may be less conventional.

Last, but certainly not least, is my 2nd favorite of the Two Part Inventions. The cloudy and mysterious key of B Minor combined with a steady, rhythmic, pulse and agile phrasing set up a suspenseful, yet ruminating vibe.
Thanks to all for their moral support and appreciation throughout this project. Stay tuned, because the Sinfonias are up next!

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[a] is a role-playing video game developed by Square and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1996.[b] It was the final Mario game published for the SNES. The game was directed by Chihiro Fujioka and Yoshihiko Maekawa, produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, and scored by Yoko Shimomura.
Super Mario RPGs story focuses on Mario and his friends as they seek to defeat Smithy, who has crashed into their world and scattered the seven star pieces of Star Road. Super Mario RPG is the first RPG in the Mario franchise, drawing from major elements of Squares RPG franchises such as Final Fantasy. The main form of fighting enemies is turn-based combat with a party of up to three characters. It is also the first game in the Mario franchise to have gameplay within an isometric 3D environment, allowing for a new variety of the exploration and platforming elements reminiscent of the Super Mario series.
Super Mario RPG was critically acclaimed, and particularly praised for its humor and 3D-rendered graphics. It was the inspiration for Nintendos other role-playing series, Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, and both are spiritual successors which retain some gameplay elements. Super Mario RPG was released on the Wii Virtual Console service in 2008, marking its debut in Europe and Australia, and later for the Wii Us Virtual Console in 2015. It was also included with the Super NES Classic Edition in 2017. A remake for Nintendo Switch is set to be released in November 2023.

This is an instrumental VGM cover of A Sad Song from Super Mario RPG. I ended up going for a kind of Malatu Astatke/William Onyeabor vibe, just to see what how it felt outside of the Chopin inspired classical realm (which the original reminds me of).

Frank Zappa shares his thoughts on how to profit in the record industry.
#zappa #classicrock #musicadvice #businessadvice
Frank Vincent Zappa[nb 1] (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American musician, composer, and bandleader. His work is characterized by nonconformity, free-form improvisation, sound experimentation, musical virtuosity and satire of American culture.[2] In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa composed rock, pop, jazz, jazz fusion, orchestral and musique concrète works; he also produced almost all of the 60-plus albums that he released with his band the Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist.[3] Zappa also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. He is considered one of the most innovative and stylistically diverse musicians of his generation.[4][5]
As a self-taught composer and performer, Zappa had diverse musical influences that led him to create music that was sometimes difficult to categorize. While in his teens, he acquired a taste for 20th-century classical modernism, African-American rhythm and blues, and doo-wop music.[6] He began writing classical music in high school, while at the same time playing drums in rhythm and blues bands, later switching to electric guitar. His debut studio album with the Mothers of Invention, Freak Out! (1966), combined songs in conventional rock and roll format with collective improvisations and studio-generated sound collages. He continued this eclectic and experimental approach whether the fundamental format was rock, jazz, or classical.
Zappas output is unified by a conceptual continuity he termed Project/Object, with numerous musical phrases, ideas, and characters reappearing across his albums.[2] His lyrics reflected his iconoclastic views of established social and political processes, structures and movements, often humorously so, and he has been described as the godfather of comedy rock.[7] He was a strident critic of mainstream education and organized religion, and a forthright and passionate advocate for freedom of speech, self-education, political participation and the abolition of censorship. Unlike many other rock musicians of his generation, he disapproved of recreational drug use, but supported decriminalization and regulation.
Zappa was a highly productive and prolific artist with a controversial critical standing; supporters of his music admired its compositional complexity, while detractors found it lacking emotional depth. He had greater commercial success outside the US, particularly in Europe. Though he worked as an independent artist, Zappa mostly relied on distribution agreements he had negotiated with the major record labels. He remains a major influence on musicians and composers. His many honors include his posthumous 1995 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the 1997 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
