Zolani Tete, the champion behind the fastest knockout in world title boxing history, was shot and killed outside his own home in South Africa on Friday August 21, 2026 at just 38 years old. Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer, breaks down Tete's boxing career, what happened on the night he was killed, and the wider gun crime problem in South Africa.
Tete was a two weight world champion, a rangy southpaw with slick defensive skills who flattened Tony's old Team GB boxing mate Paul Butler on the night Butler was supposed to become a two weight champion himself. Tete was suspended from boxing in 2022 after testing positive for a banned substance. That four year ban expired just weeks earlier, and at 38 he was preparing a comeback fight for November.
According to police reports, Tete was waiting for his gate to open outside his home in the Eastern Cape when two men wearing balaclavas got out of another vehicle and opened fire. A 27 year old woman in his passenger seat was shot multiple times and is in hospital. Nobody has been arrested and the motive is still unknown, so Tony sticks to what has actually been confirmed, focusing instead on the same violence that took heavyweight Corrie Sanders years earlier and the gun crime problem South Africa still cannot get under control.
