BREAKING: At least 12 people have been arrested after Madison crews and police in riot gear cleared the protest encampment at Williamson and Baldwin streets β the site of the July 22 fatal police shooting of 38-year-old Corey Ruiz. The intersection has reopened to traffic.
Crews moved in before dawn Tuesday and warned protesters to clear out around 5 a.m. Officials say memorial candles thrown by protesters sparked three fires, and rocks and other objects were hurled at city workers. At least a dozen people were taken into custody and one protester was hospitalized. Memorial items were moved to nearby Demetral Field, and the city said unhoused people staying at the site would be bused to hotels. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said repeated calls to end the occupation peacefully were ignored. The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating the shooting as a homicide, with four officers on administrative leave.
