A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake (reported as 7.1 by Japan’s Meteorological Agency) struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southern Japan on July 28, 2026, causing widespread damage, injuries, and chaos.
The shallow quake, centered near Uto at a depth of about 10 km, produced maximum intensity shaking of 7 on Japan’s seismic scale. A tsunami advisory was issued for coastal areas before later being lifted. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged residents to stay away from the coast and move to safe locations as evacuation orders affected hundreds of thousands of people.
