After extensive testing, I have determined that this trick is most likely only possible due to some emulation inconsistencies characteristic of Virtual Console. I tried for several hours to get this trick to work on emulator, trying every imaginable angle, position, and target frame, and I could never get it to work, whereas on VC I was able to get it semi-frequently. However, even with the same position, angle, and target frame, I was never able to replicate the trick on VC, which heavily suggests that it is only possible due to some emulation error. This is the first instance of this phenomenon to my knowledge, but it probably happens in several places.
