![The Deadly Kiss of the Blue Ringed Octopus
In spite of its beautiful colours, the blue ringed octopus is one of the most venomous marine creatures known to man.
The blue-ringed octopus can be found from the Sea of Japan down to the waters of southern Australia across from the Philippines to Vanuatu. They inhabit depths from intertidal flats down to 50m.
They tend to hide in crevices or under rocks during the day, and emerge at night.
The blue-ringed octopus has a nasty surprise for any potential prey or predators.
It has an extremely toxic venom, but it doesnt make it itself.
Within its salivary glands live ocean bacteria, produce the chemical tetrodotoxin.
It then uses its beak to make a hole in its preys shell to spit the saliva in it.
The toxin in the saliva paralyzes the prey while the blue-ringed octopus eats it.
When threatened the colour of its blue rings will become much more iridescent and brighter in colour.
This is a strong, fast-acting toxin that paralyses the target by blocking the nerves from transmitting messages. This toxin can be fatal to humans.
Many people have come close to death as a result of the bite of the blue-ringed octopus. There is enough toxin in a single bite to kill 26 adult humans.
The paralysis that overcomes the victim but they remain fully conscious but unable to move or speak.
In the worst case, a dose of the venom can shut down muscles such as those that keep you breathing and cause death within 30 minutes.
Death usually occurs as a result of lack of oxygen. If mouth to mouth resucitatation or CPR is given to a victim of a blue-ringed octopus, they may fully recover.
The good news for swimmers in the waters where the blue-ringed octopus are not aggressive and tend to avoid confrontation by flattening their body and blending into their surroundings.
Humans have only been injured when a blue-ringed octopus is provoked or stepped on.
Some people purchase the blue ringed octopus for a pet.
It is not recommended as these beautiful but extremely venomous creatures have one of the most potent toxins on earth, and there is no antidote.
