on the alté scene, isn’t just flexing her linguistic skills but capturing a feeling. “A lot of the time what I’m trying to achieve can’t be done in English, I can’t unlock that bounce,” she tells Clash.
brazy, 22, grew up in Nigeria but has lived in the UK since she was 11. She’s animated when she speaks about the early Nigerian R&B and rap that inspired her, like Sasha P (“she was just that girl”) and Yoruba rapper Da Grin. “He’s the one who taught me how to use language to unlock different sounds,” she says. brazy’s early music consisted of freestyles over her friends' songs, often recorded from her bed. She caught the attention of alté royalty Cruel Santino who asked for a vocal assist on ‘Matilda’.
A collab with buzzy London rapper Len followed, as did shout outs from Amaarae. It was then that brazy started thinking: “You know what, I’m pretty good at this, why don’t I give it an actual try and take complete creative control.”
