Brave Blade is a vertical scrolling shoot ’em up released by Eighting/Raizing in 2000. If those names sound familiar, they’re the same developers behind classics like Battle Garegga and Soukyugurentai. By 2000, arcades were shifting more toward fighters and rhythm games, so a new shmup like this flew under the radar — but it’s become a bit of a cult favorite.

Instead of piloting a spaceship, you control a knight flying on a mechanical steed, mixing medieval fantasy with futuristic technology. That gives the game a unique look compared to the usual sci-fi ships of most shooters. The big hook in gameplay is the sword mechanic: not only can you fire bullets like a standard shooter, but you can also swing a blade to slash enemies, deflect bullets, and deal heavy close-up damage. Timing sword use against waves of bullets added a layer of strategy and made the game stand out.

The levels are fast-paced and packed with enemies, bullets, and screen-filling bosses — typical of Raizing’s challenging style. Visually, it had a mix of 2D sprites and early 3D effects, giving it a sharp look for the era, though it wasn’t as flashy as some other arcade titles of 2000. The soundtrack, like most Raizing games, was energetic and fit the high-speed action.

Unfortunately, Brave Blade never received an official home port. That means the only way to play it today is either on the original arcade hardware or through emulation (MAME). Because it came out late in the shmup “golden era,” it didn’t get the same attention as earlier Raizing hits, but among fans of arcade shooters, it’s respected as one of the more inventive late titles.
