Throughout the past 30 years I have had the privilege of working with MANY successful (& popular bands) during their formative years; bands like AFI, Nothing More, Meshuggah, Alter Bridge & Mastodon to name a select few. What has been both intriguing & provocative is witnessing these musicians/bands mature over time; BUT truthfully, their formative years are my FAVE,…when musicians are young & FULL of that juvenescence is when we see unforgettable live performances full of vigor, unlimited intensity, spontaneity AND improvisation. For ALL bands it is a moment in time & surely one that will one day pass them by, which is one reason I’ve ALWAYS loved shooting LIVE performances (even in the smart phone era); because I am capturing a moment in time & one that will never be re-lived. As of late not many bands have helped me to admonish this truth, but one that surely has is New Orleans, bimbocore afficionados, BRAT! I first heard of Brat in late 2024 from Kirk Windstein of Crowbar who had obviously become a fan of the band’s in-roads in cultivating their respective sound AND fanbase. SO, I took notice & got my hands on the band’s full-length debut, ‘Social Grace’ out via Prosthetic Records. I quickly recognized why this band is moving forward quickly & gracefully; their low-end, 2-min hardcore driven songs will pummel you with their brash veracity & singer Liz Selfish’s unrelenting growl gives them the ornamentation they need to stand alone. Coupled with years of unrelenting touring & giving fans a unique live experience (primarily due to Liz’s onstage antics), Brat has become a YOUNG force to reckon with on the national scene. SO, when the band stopped through San Antonio on November 15th, 2025, for a performance at Vibes, I knew I wanted to go out & get the skinny firsthand. In the interview below you will see us discuss the following: coming up in the New Orleans scene, early EPs, their marketing strategy for Brat (& their aesthetic), their genre, touring, the themes for ‘Social Grace’, plan for 2026, videos & MUCH MORE! To my extended RMW Familia – if you don’t know about Brat be SURE to look for them. You WILL dig it! To Liz & Brenner – thank you for sharing & giving our cameras your brutal personas. Happy Thanksgiving ALL! Enjoy! ~ El Mero Metal #brat #robbsmetalworks #socialgrace
