Brain Trauma with Mild Dementia @HighImpactLegalExhibits

This animation was used in a brain trauma case to help explain a patient's dementia on the cellular level, and the impact of additional injuries.

Prior to the trauma, the patient had mild dementia and some neurons were already damaged. An additional injury triggered the microglia into an excitatory state called immunocytotoxicity.

With an additional injury, the excited microglia release substances that are toxic to the brain cells. This process is called neurodegeneration. The trauma to the patient's brain accelerated his pre-existing mild dementia causing more neurons to be damaged.

The parts of the brain that are most sensitive to neurodegeneration are the frontal lobes, pariental lobes, and hippocampus. The dementia was linked to depression, panic attacks, anxiety, and aggressive behavior. The new TBI accelerated his dementia, and made all his symptoms worse.

The uterine artery supplies blood to the mother’s uterus, which transfers oxygen and nutrients to the placenta, where it travels through the umbilical cord and feeds the developing infant. Waste product is then returned to the placenta. Oxygen and waste travel to and from the baby via the umbilical cord, which serves as the lifeline for the developing infant.

CT scans and MRI’s that showed mild TBI, but the radiographic films didn’t reveal the full scope of her damages. Animation would be crucial to making jurors understand the brutal significance of the coup-contrecoup brain injury her client sustained, and how it caused further long-term damage that would disrupt her everyday life. The brain first collides with the impact site in the skull (coup), bounces back, and then impacts the opposite side of the skull (contrecoup). The victim’s facial fractures are then introduced, which included a fractured sphenoid bone and right orbital fracture. The animation reiterates what happened with a 2D animated coup-contrecoup, highlighting the impacts to both sides of the brain. It then demonstrates how this mechanism of injury disrupts the brain cells through diffuse axonal shearing throughout the brain. After establishing the cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and physical problems this mechanism of injury will ultimately cause, the animation concludes with colorized CT scans and MRI’s highlighting the damaged areas throughout the victim’s brain.
