On Wednesday, July 14th, researchers at the University of San Francisco demonstrated that full words and sentences could be decoded directly from brainwaves! The interface was featured a 128-electrode electrocorticography array placed over the areas of the primary motor cortex responsible for controlling the muscles involved in speech. This is the first time that a brain-computer interface has been able to decode speech directly from brain signals, as previous interfaces have relied on letter-by-letter typing.
