A masterpiece of pictorial grandeur mirroring the idyllic summer retreat in Hofstetten, Switzerland, where Brahms had composed it. The melodies are in full bloom, expressing the transience of the human experience through the recollection of his song Wie Melodien zieht es mir (“Like melodies it steals me”) Op.105 No.1. Though without specific allusions, the work generally breathes the kind of lyricism found in his other songs: Komm bald (“Come soon”), Op. 97 No. 6 & Auf dem Kirchhofe (“In the Churchyard”) Op.105 No.4
