Released in 1990 by Namco, Boxy Boy is basically the arcade version of the classic Japanese puzzle game Sokoban (“warehouse keeper”), which had already been popular on computers in the ’80s. The core idea is very simple: you play as a little character in a warehouse, and your job is to push crates into designated spots.
The catch is that you can only push the boxes, never pull them. That means if you shove a crate into a corner or against a wall in the wrong spot, you may have trapped yourself — and the puzzle has to be restarted. This makes it more of a thinking game than a fast-action arcade title.
Namco dressed it up with colorful graphics, upbeat music, and a cute little worker character to make it approachable for arcades. The cabinet let you move the character around using a joystick, and the challenge came from carefully planning each move instead of just reacting quickly, which made it stand out from most arcade games of the time.
While it wasn’t as flashy or popular as Namco’s bigger hits like Galaga or Tekken, Boxy Boy had a quiet charm. It appealed to players who liked puzzles, logic challenges, or just wanted something slower-paced compared to shooters and fighters.
