This time I was messing around with ground type properties. Apparently there exists a glitch in this game where the ball warps straight into the cup if it's rolling for long enough, but I don't think there's any surface in the unmodified game with low enough friction for this to ever happen.
I managed to get my own back on the next hole, at least.
