Boulder Municipal Airport has officially entered a new, cleaner era of flight! On July 10th, 2026, the Colorado Division of Aeronautics joined the City of Boulder and the local community for a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the rollout of Swift UL94 unleaded avgas.
Boulder is now the third airport in Colorado—joining Centennial and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airports—to begin the transition to this cleaner alternative. This shift is largely driven by Colorado House Bill 1235, which encourages airports to move away from leaded aviation fuels, and aligns with the FAA’s national goal to eliminate leaded avgas by 2030.
Making the Switch Easier for Pilots:
To support this rollout, the airport's Fixed Base Operator, Journeys Aviation, has partnered with Swift Fuels to store and provide the product. To ensure the new fuel is accessible, several incentives are currently in place:
Price Matching: A $63,000 grant from the Colorado Division of Aeronautics subsidizes UL94 to match the price of traditional 100LL avgas.
Certification Support: The City of Boulder is offering hangar rent credits to airport tenants to help offset the cost of the federal certification required to use UL94.
Looking Ahead:
Building on this momentum, the Division has approved two more unleaded fuel infrastructure grants. The Colorado Air and Space Port and Cañon City's Fremont County Airport are next to make the switch!
