In this video I unbox the Bose QuietComfort Ultra (1st generation) and cover the most important technical points: drivers, chip, noise cancelling, frequency response, connectivity, and weight.
Bose unfortunately doesn’t publish much detail about the driver / diaphragm on the 1st gen. What’s known is that it uses a 35 mm driver.
The chip is more interesting: the 1st-gen QuietComfort Ultra appears to use the Qualcomm QCC5181. That’s a Bluetooth audio SoC from Qualcomm’s S5 platform and the basis for Snapdragon Sound. In these headphones it handles the Bluetooth connection, codec support (including SBC, AAC, and aptX Adaptive), audio processing, features like spatial audio / head tracking, and parts of ANC and voice processing. In short: it’s the technical heart of the sound, connection, and noise cancelling.
What I especially liked:
• very good noise cancelling
• stable Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity
• surprisingly light weight of only 250 g
• practical, high-quality carrying case
I’m mixed on the sound: generally good, but in the default tuning it’s rather bass-heavy and more about listening pleasure than neutrality. If you prefer a more linear sound, you should adjust it in the app.
