I found my first Masher, which is a Jakobs pistol with a barrel that shoots 5 bullets like a shotgun. These were in Borderlands 1 but in Borderlands 2 the only Masher like gun was a legendary Jakobs, The Maggie.

Masher are back for Borderlands 3 and they feel amazing and more like Borderlands 1 Mashers than the Maggie.
