Trigger warning: If you're an author (especially if I'm talking about one of your books here) or a reader who doesn't like negative reviews on books, like I often am, then this video isn't for you. I did this video because talking negatively about books I don't like comes with some difficulty to me, and I have been criticized for it in the past. I wanted to challenge myself. In the end, I just felt negative, so please don't expect many more of these videos from me in the future. š
Also, I realize that some of these books are loved by other readers. They just werenāt for me. Opinions on books or any other form of art or media are subjective, not objective, even when analyzing with a degree backing up opinions. Tropes, pacing, characterization, and how well all these are used within any book will work for some while they donāt work for others. You can have two of the most educated critics disagree with the pacing and/or character development and/or the prose of a book, for example. They can both be correct and both be wrong at the same time. That's because art reviews and critiques are subjective and are not objective. Therefore, take what I say In this video with a grain of salt.
I also realize that there are cracks in my reasoning here. Some things are indeed objective, like bad grammar, and books that are universally hated by critics. But I've never come across a book that is universally hated by everyone. I have come across movies and/or books that were hated by critics but typical consumers enjoyed and vise versa. So what does that mean? It all just makes me want to stick to talking about books I enjoy because I tend to overthink things. And overthink. And overthink...
Books mentioned:
1. Solaris
2. Rolling in the Deep
3. Rotters
4. The House of a Hundred Whispers
5. The Halloween Moon
6. Dracul
