BOOK REVIEW: The Fake Out by Sharon M. Peterson

Summary: Maybell Sampson is a librarian in a small town. The budget for the library keeps shrinking, and her mother’s health bills keep coming, but she is handling it all because she has taken care of everything on her own her whole life. When May finds a football superstar sleeping in her library, though, a crazy downpour of events including a fake engagement with the football superstar lead her to wonder “how can this be my life” and how to handle it all.
Audiobook: The narrator was perfect for the main female character (May) and added so much emotion to the story. Sometimes it was hard to tell the difference between other characters, especially males, and the main male character’s voice (Chris) was a bit cringy.
Positives
The book had everything people love about romcoms: humor, romance, supportive best friend, gorgeous and sweet love interest, relatable female main character, and all the drama and expected plot points.
The situational humor was truly funny.
The voice of May was so grumpy and sassy but realistic and caring that she is lovable and entertaining.
Chris was not realistic, but he was downright adorable, so he was easy to root for.
May had a real and relatable problem and flaw that she had to overcome.
The romance never went too far (no spice).
Negatives
The book has cursing.
Some crude humor and suggestive dialogue are in the book.
When the book had about forty minutes left, the action and plot slowed down to the point that I lost interest. I can’t explain why the plot slowed down because of spoilers, but it didn’t have to be so drawn out to make the point.
Overall: A fun and funny book
