This is an excellent and important book for any American to read.

I also recommend Behold the Dreamers by Mbulo Imbue and The Book of Unknown Americans by Christina Henriquez.
I recently picked up City of Dreams: 400 years of Immigrant New York City by Tyler Ambinder if you are interested in reading it along with me!
