In 2022, Japanese confectionary maker, Morinaga released a series of games tied to the theme of the popular Pino brand of Ice Cream! These treats are similar in style to Bon Bons, vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate. Sold 6 in a box for about ￥150, or 1 US dollar, under the “new normal” thanks to the recent hyperinflation that has gripped Japan.
The campaign was launched with Image Girl, Hikaru Takahashi. Sega co-produced the headline game, based on Puyo Puyo! Five other original games followed. The series was such a hit that Hikaru returned in 2023 in a new campaign. This time Hikaru had the uncontrollable urge to tap her fingers, eventually resorting to Pino to relive her obsession, wherein she finds Takahashi Meijin, master of the 16 button presses per second. He recommends she try the new Pino Games, and then passes the torch onto the next generation, dubbing Hikaru as the new Takahashi Meijin! And if you doubt her gamer bonafides, she was featured as a guest announcer in Street Fighter 6!
This also isn’t the first go-round for Morinaga, the company teamed with Bandai-Namco for a cute mini-game of Pac-Man in 2020, if you’ll remember.
These games, 12 in all, are playable on any iOS or Android machine. All you need to do is scan the QR code, follow the instructions and off ya go! Oh, but there is one pesky detail, that keeps the games region locked. You have to scan the box each and every time you play! So you can’t just snag a QR and play for free for all eternity. Since I can get these boxes easily, its time to share with you the entire Pino Games Series!
