The Boeing 747 is hands down my favorite aircraft. And I know in the aviation community I am not alone, big names like Sam Chui have also grown fond of the Queen Of The Skies along with many rabid fans from across the globe. During the 52 years the 747 has served the nations of the world, it’s not only brought so many people together, but also put various nations on the world map including Australia, Iran, Pakistan, South Africa, Hong Kong, and the list goes on. The 747 holds many world records including being the longest airliner by length (the 747-8), the most people ever carried on an airplane (1,088 people on an El Al 747 during Operation Solomon), and the fastest subsonic flight ever achieved (recently won by a British Airways 747 which achieved the record due to Storm Ciara). Sadly though, the 747 is being phased out due to the rise of “Big Twin” jets such as the Boeing 777, 787, and the Airbus A330 and A350. Production is also coming to a halt soon which concludes half a century of great progress. I myself am lucky to have travelled on at least 4 747’s during my lifetime, one Air New Zealand flight, two Qantas flights (if I’m not mistaken), and one British Airways flight. Even though in no way am I a seasoned traveler on the 747, I certainly have very fond memories of it (including what could very well be my oldest memory). I barely remember being 2 and 3/4 years old and just wandering around the top deck, galley, and even crew accommodations of a Qantas 747 on a flight from London to Sydney. I also celebrated my first birthday on an Air New Zealand 747 to which the captain actually announced my birthday on the intercom as the plane crossed the international dateline (which is referenced at the very end of the video).
While it’s a tragedy that the 747s are disappearing from mainstream service, their legacy will live on for generations, and I myself decided to make my own tribute to the Queen herself.
