For a generation, Baltimore was the city from "The Wire". Drug corners, wiretaps, bodies in west Baltimore rowhouses, and a nickname the city gave itself — Bodymore.

From January to August 2026, Baltimore recorded 60 murders. In July 2015 alone, it had recorded 45.

The city closed 2025 with 133 homicides, its lowest in nearly 50 years, and the independent Council on Criminal Justice now finds Baltimore's homicide rate running 68% below 2019 levels, more than double the decline across its sample of American cities.
