Sounds of my Grandparents Era
Bön for Denmark (Kongernes konge) sung by Per Biørn on Columbia 78 RPM Record
Recorded January 13, 1915 on Columbia 78 RPM Record E2247. Played on a Victrola Talking Machine with a Tungs-Tone Stylus. Videography by Dane C. Sorensen.
There are probably far better sounding recordings of this, but this video gives you an idea what an average persons in the 1930s would have been able to listen to on their home talking machine. This record belonged to my Grandparents - Frederick and Genevieve Robertson.
Lyrics: Adolph Recke, 1848
Melody: E. Horneman, 1848
Lyric Translation:
The King of Kings! one you can
screens our beloved fatherland.
Lord, you alone
may victory grant us,
cherish our glorious and ancient Dan!
Throw on us all ties of unity,
send from the heavens the spirit of enthusiasm!
Follow in danger
the brave little crowd!
lift over the blessing of your army!
Loving father, listen to our voice,
Peace and freedom adorn our coast!
Riches follow
with the screw over wave,
the field bless you with the richest harvest!
Lord of lords! mighty and great,
gracious you hear our praying chorus!
Mister! you one
may victory grant us
cherish our glorious and ancient North!
