When the left side engine mount on the E90 goes bad and you hit a bump, the engine will bounce and that could cause the plastic power steering pump pulley to contact the frame on some older cars (2007-2008). It's a good idea to upgrade that pulley to an aluminum one to try to prevent that damage from turning into a shredded belt.

The part number is URO-012392. You should be able to get this from most auto parts stores.

Of course the real solution is to replace the engine mounts but that's going to be difficult for some people who don't own an engine support bar or are uncomfortable doing the sort of job where you have to drop the subframe.

Other causes of belt shredding or throwing include:
1. Oil Filter Housing Gasket leaking oil onto the belt causing it to weaken
2. Worn out belt tensioner pulley
3. Missing power steering pump bracket bolts
