This quartet came together out of a shared love for the extraordinary music of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, especially the repertoire from Brubeck’s legendary album Time Out.
Released in 1959, Time Out changed the landscape of jazz. It became one of the most celebrated jazz albums ever recorded, not only because of its immense musicality, but because it introduced wider audiences to unusual time signatures, sophisticated ensemble playing, and a distinctive balance of intelligence, lyricism, and swing. Among its most famous works, Blue Rondo à la Turk remains one of Brubeck’s boldest and most original compositions, combining rhythmic influence from Turkish music with the drive and freedom of American jazz.
In this performance, the Quartet explores Blue Rondo à la Turk in a fresh contemporary setting, drawing on the energy of live performance while staying connected to the brilliance of the original composition. We believe this music still has enormous life in it, and we are proud to be performing it for audiences around the UK.
Recorded live at The Bull’s Head, one of London’s iconic jazz venues, this concert forms part of an ongoing live show dedicated to the music of Brubeck and Desmond. More UK tour dates and gig announcements will be released soon.
