With Flock cameras scattered around Green Bay, citizens who have concerns about privacy, looking for ways to make a change. Over the weekend, a group got together for a "Green Bay de-Flock meeting."
Lisa Sanderfoot says most of the group wants the cameras removed, with legislative changes to follow.
She added the group that met isn't encouraging any vandalism of the cameras, "The city of Green Bay pays for them. We don't want to ruin Flock equipment; we don't want to ruin city equipment. That's just throwing money away."
Across the country, some of those opposed have resorted to blocking the camera's view by holding up a sign in front of it.
FOX 11 asked the Green Bay Police Department: If people in the community hold up signs to block the cameras from reading license plates, is that a violation of any kind?
GBPD referred FOX 11 to legal counsel. When we asked the city attorney, we were referred back to GBPD.
Sanderfoot says one of the best things that concerned citizens can do is reach out to elected officials.
Green Bay District 6 Ald. Joey Prestley says he receives calls and emails about Flock cameras weekly.
In an August interview, Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis told FOX 11 the cameras are a "valuable public safety tool." Davis also told FOX 11 the Green Bay Police Department expects to update its policy soon. That would include mandating monthly audits of the Flock system.
Green Bay's Flock transparency portal says 456,215 unique license plates have been detected, and 597 user search sessions have occurred over the last 30 days.
Sanderfoot also made it clear her concerns aren't just with Flock, but with any automatic license plate reading technology.
