In southern Utah, the BLM Kanab Field Office and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) coordinate the National Audubon Society's local Christmas Bird Count (CBC) activities. Through the CBC event, teachers and students take the classroom outside and discover the natural world in their backyard! As citizen scientists, youth understand that, by gathering data, they are contributing to a larger purpose. Their information is added to a global database that government agencies use when making conservation decisions. In becoming part of the process, students also gain an appreciation for BLM multiple use management, and of the BLM as a community partner and environmental education provider.
