Not only was this first published in the 1927 American Songbag, I can't find it anywhere else.
My love of this song is the a desperate cry for help. I would have to admit, as a Christian (although not a very good one), the majority of my prayers are, "Help me, Lord!"
Sandburg writes: "A brief story . . . compact in diction . . . useless to add or subtract words."
Among the miracles most associated with Jesus was giving sight to the blind. The other reference is to one of the thief's next to Jesus who were also crucified.
