After the Dagor-nuin-Giliath (Battle-under-Stars) when the Noldor deemed Melkor to be defeated Turgon, one of the Noldor's lords was obsessed by a disturbing dream, which predicted the downfall oh his people. After that the Vala Ulmo (lord of water) showed him the hidden valley of Tumladen and guided him to found a secret realm there.
With a construction period of around 52 years and utmost secrecy the city of Gondolin was completed. In the year of 116 (First Age) Turgon lead his people from Vinyamar in Nevrast where he had dwelled before to Tumladen in small groups. There Gondolin flourished under the protection of Ulmo and the Eagles of Manwë who had their aeries in the surrounding mountans and had a long period of peace in the following.
The refrain of this song is borrowed from Ulmo's words:
"Longest of all the realms of the Eldalië shall Gondolin stand against Melkor. But love not too well the work of thy hands and the devices of thy heart; and remember that the true hope of the Noldor lieth in the West and cometh from the Sea."
This song is a part of the concept album "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" (1998).

Nachdem die Noldor Morgoth in der Dagor-nuin-Giliath (Schlacht-unter-Sternen) vorerst besiegt glaubten wurde Turgon, einer ihrer Fürsten, von einem beunruhigenden Traum heimgesucht, der ihm den Untergang seines Volkes voraussagte. Der Vala Ulmo (Herr des Wassers) zeigte ihm daraufhin das versteckte Tal von Tumladen und wies ihn an, dort ein geheimes Reich zu errichten.
Nach ungefähr 52 Jahren Bauzeit war unter größter Geheimhaltung die Stadt Gondolin fertig gestellt. Im Jahr 116 des Ersten Zeitalters führte Turgon sein Volk von Vinyamar in Nevrast, wo er zuvor gewohnt hatte, in kleinen Gruppen nach Tumladen. Dort begann Gondolin unter dem Schutz Ulmos und der Adler Manwës, die in den umliegenden Bergen ihre Nester hatten, aufzublühen und im Folgenden eine lange Periode des Friedens zu erleben.
Der Refrain des Liedes ist an Ulmos Worte angelehnt:
"Am längsten von allen Reichen der Eldalië soll Gondolin gegen Melkor standhalten. Doch vertraue nicht zu fest auf deiner Hände Werk und deines Herzens Pläne; und dessen sei eingedenk, dass die wahre Hoffnung der Noldor im Westen liegt und vom Meere kommt."
